Blackhawk Segment
Trail Hiked March 9 and March 12, 2018.
After about a year hiatus, which was spent doing some much needed landscaping and some bike riding, I picked up the Ice Age Trail project again. I had two segments left to do to complete the project I started out to do in 2016. I did this segment over two days. The first day I hiked from north to south with the goal of getting to Oleson’s cabin and return. After a slight detour when I get temporarily lost, I was able to complete the day’s goal (thanks to Google Maps for helping me find the route again). The highlight was definitely the Oleson cabin. I was able to do this hike when there was still a bit of snow on the ground which made the cabin very picturesque. The second day I hiked from the south to north with the goal of a pioneer kiln. The kiln was not overly impressive, but it was interesting to read how it was used. The best feature of this portion of the trail was Lake LaGrange. I did encounter a bit of a problem. On the way out on the hike, it was below freezing and it was no problem hiking. By the time I returned, the temperature rose to about 40 and the snow on the trail turned to a rushing stream down the slopes of the Kettle Moraine topography. The return hike was brutal with the water and mud. It was good to get back to the car!
